Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow

The Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage proudly contributes to the vibrant cultural mosaic in the Grande Prairie region. We celebrate our past success and look forward to a promising future!
In September 1975, Mrs. Olga Friesen began to explore the possibility of offer Ukrainian language and dances classes to interested area residents.  The Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage was formed with the intent of promoting Ukrainian culture in the Peace Region.  In November 1975, classes in both language and dance were underway at the Rec Plex with 40 students registered.  Classes were conducted by Olga Friesen, Mrs. Eva Hannas and Mrs. Helen Pollard.

The Troyanda Society held a St. Nicholas Day Concert, Pysanky workshop and numerous bake and craft sales. The dance group performed at many local events.  The first Spring Concert was held in May of 1977 and the Grande Prairie Regional College and included singing, poetry and dancing. The Troyanda Society is very thankful for the dedication, commitment and vision shown by its founding members.

After more than 30 years in the community of Grande Prairie, the Troyanda Society still flourishes.  We aim to provide programs which honor the culture of Ukraine.  The Troyanda dancers are the most prominent element of the Society.  Our Malanka celebration and Spring Concert have become traditions which are eagerly anticipated by the community.  Our dancers also perform in support of other community agencies, such as the QE II Festival of Trees, Seniors Centers, Canada Day Parade and many others. They have participated in festivals and competitions throughout Alberta.  They have won many prizes, and the hearts of their audiences.

Troyanda continues to grow and develop new programs to meet the needs of the community.  In 2003, Troyanda began a new tradition; the Vitaemo Festival. This annual festival celebrates “All things Ukrainian”.  It includes music, dancing, children’s activities, Ukrainian marketplace and kitchen as well as prominent Ukrainian entertainers.

Troyanda hosts a summer dance camp each year.  This camp provides children with excellent dance instruction as well as the opportunity to experience many Ukrainian artistic mediums and crafts.  There is singing, dancing and a whole lot of fun!

January 2007 marked a new milestone for the Society as they purchased their own studio.  A beautiful, brand new facility with a state of the art dance floor and sound system.  Troyanda is very proud of their accomplishment; having their own studio allows for a greater flexibility when planning and expanding their programming.

Troyanda members are a dedicated and enthusiastic group. They continue to bring new and exciting ideas forward, which result in new programs and events being developed and implemented.
